Proposal to increase primary school places at Spring Bank Primary School

Due to recent increases in the number of children aged 0-5 who live in the Hyde Park and Headingley areas, it has been identified that additional school places are required to meet the need for local families.

We are now seeking your views on the following proposal: To expand Spring Bank Primary School from a capacity of 210 to 420 pupils by increasing the admission limit in Reception from 30 to 60 pupils with effect from September 2018. It would take several years for the school to reach full capacity.

The proposal would require additional accommodation, which cannot be provided on the existing Spring Bank site due to site restrictions.  An opportunity has emerged for the council to acquire a suitable site in the vicinity of Spring Bank Primary School which would be of a sufficient size to provide the extra accommodation required.  This site, located on Buckingham Road off Headingley Lane, is currently owned by the Grammar School at Leeds and is known as Rose Court.

The consultation runs from Thursday 25 February to Monday 14 March 2016 at 4pm. We are holding informal drop-in sessions at Spring Bank Primary School where officers will be available to answer any questions or concerns on the following dates and times:

Friday 4 March 8.30am-10.00am (postponed)
Friday 4 March 3.00pm-4.30pm

Wednesday 9 March 8.30am – 10.00am (replacement for postponed session)
Wednesday 9 March 6.00pm-7.30pm

  1. This appears to be being put forward as the only viable option for retaining the site as a school, and as such we would be all but obliged to support the proposal.
However, I do not believe this is the only option as I have not yet seen any proper reasons why the Buckingham Road site should not be a separate school.
I am not saying that there are no proper reasons, only that I have not seen them, but I instinctively feel that two schools cooperating are more likely to do better than one school cut in half…

  2. Most of the people I have spoken to about this have expressed concern that the decision that “this is the best option” was made behind closed doors and that we have been shown none of the information leading to that decision.
It also seems likely that that decision was made by the same people who decided that it would be a good idea to close several schools in the area not so long ago…

  3. The proposed expansion of Spring Bank Primary School, which would require the school to operate a split site utilising Rose Court, is the local authority’s preferred option to address the projected need for additional school places in this area. However stakeholders may wish to put forward other options for consideration as part of the current consultation process.
